PREDICT STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES:

ONE HEALTH SURVEILLANCE

The PREDICT project contributed to global early warning systems to detect and reduce the impacts of emerging diseases that move between animals and people (zoonotic diseases).

To successfully implement One Health disease surveillance in these regions, we developed standard operating procedures  and trained over 6,000 people in 19 unique One Health topics. Training topics included safe animal surveillance and sampling (specific to key taxonomic groups), ethical human subjects research, cold chain management and safe sample storage and transport, safe laboratory practices, and techniques for behavioral risk investigations. The protocols and guides available in this book were developed to ensure safe (for humans and animals) and efficient implementation of the project. However, the knowledge, skills, and procedures they contain are valuable resources for other projects and initiatives utilizing a One Health approach for disease surveillance.

Use of  these protocols should not replace  professional training in biosafety, veterinary medicine, animal capture and handling, animal sampling, handling of infectious pathogens, laboratory safety, etc. We recommend that these materials be used by  qualified professionals and individuals with experience in these topics.
